Comparatives (πιο… / -ότερος)
To compare, Greek has two routes. The easy ANALYTIC one puts the invariable particle πιο (“more”) before the adjective: πιο μεγάλος (“bigger”), πιο καλός. The SYNTHETIC one adds the ending -ότερος/-ύτερος: μεγάλος → μεγαλύτερος. A few everyday adjectives are suppletive: καλός → καλύτερος (“better”). “Than” is από: μεγαλύτερος από εμένα (“bigger than me”).
The rule
Greek builds the comparative (“-er / more …”) two ways. The easy analytic way puts πιο before the plain adjective: πιο μεγάλος (“bigger”), πιο γρήγορος (“faster”) - πιο never changes. The synthetic way uses the ending -ότερος / -ότερη / -ότερο, which inflects like any adjective: μεγάλος → μεγαλύτερος. A few are suppletive: καλός (“good”) → καλύτερος (“better”), never καλότερος. “Than” is από: μεγαλύτερος από εμένα (“bigger than me”).
