The Aorist: Group 2

Group-2 verbs form the aorist on a -ησ- perfective stem with the ordinary past endings, and no augment: αγαπώ → αγάπησα, αγάπησες, αγάπησε, αγαπήσαμε, αγαπήσατε, αγάπησαν. The endings are familiar; the stress is what to watch, because it moves within the paradigm. It sits on the -ά- of the stem in the three singular forms and in the 3rd plural (αγάπησα, αγάπησε, αγάπησαν) but shifts onto the -ή- in the 1st and 2nd person plural (αγαπήσαμε, αγαπήσατε) - the three-syllable rule doing its ordinary work as the ending gets longer. The same -ησ- stem carries the future and the perfect (θα αγαπήσω, έχω αγαπήσει), so learning it once pays three times.
