The Mediopassive Aorist (-θηκα) & its Sound Changes
The mediopassive aorist - the completed past of the voice - is built on the -θηκ- marker plus the aorist endings (-α, -ες, -ε, -ήκαμε, -ήκατε, -αν): πλύθηκα, κοιμήθηκα. But the -θηκα rides a PERFECTIVE stem that is often not the present stem, and the consonant before it shifts predictably: -ζομαι → -στηκα (ετοιμάζομαι → ετοιμάστηκα, χρειάζομαι → χρειάστηκα), -χομαι → -χτηκα (δέχομαι → δέχτηκα), -φτομαι → -φτηκα (σκέφτομαι → σκέφτηκα), -εύομαι → -εύτηκα (παντρεύομαι → παντρεύτηκα), plus -νομαι → -θηκα (χάνομαι → χάθηκα). A few are memorised: the suppletive βρίσκομαι → βρέθηκα and the irregular φαίνομαι → φάνηκα (an -ηκα with no θ at all). The stress lands on the -θη-/-στη- syllable in the singular and shifts to -ήκαμε/-ήκατε in the 1st/2nd plural.
