Forming -μένος: the Stem Changes
-μένος rides on the PERFECTIVE non-active stem - the same stem the aorist passive (-θηκα) and the -εί form use - with a small, regular consonant change right before the -μ-: (1) labial verbs -φω/-βω/-πω double to -μμένος: γράφω → γραμμένος, κρύβω → κρυμμένος. (2) -ζω verbs give -σμένος: κουράζω → κουρασμένος, ετοιμάζω → ετοιμασμένος. (3) velar verbs -γω/-κω/-χω give -γμένος: ανοίγω → ανοιγμένος. (4) -νω verbs are mostly plain -μένος: δένω → δεμένος, ντύνω → ντυμένος, πλένω → πλυμένος, with a few inserting -σ-: κλείνω → κλεισμένος. A couple are irregular: παντρεύομαι → παντρεμένος (the -υ- drops), χάνω → χαμένος (short stem χα-). Learn the class of a verb once and its participle is predictable. The stress lands on -μένος every time.
The rule
-μένος rides on the perfective non-active stem - the same stem behind the aorist passive - with a small, regular consonant change right before the -μ-. Labial verbs in -φω / -βω / -πω double the consonant to -μμένος: γράφω → γραμμένος. -ζω verbs give -σμένος: κουράζω → κουρασμένος, ετοιμάζομαι → ετοιμασμένος. Velar verbs in -γω / -κω / -χω give -γμένος: ανοίγω → ανοιγμένος. -νω verbs are mostly plain -μένος: δένω → δεμένος, ντύνομαι → ντυμένος, with a few inserting a σ: κλείνω → κλεισμένος. Two everyday irregulars are worth memorising: παντρεύομαι → παντρεμένος (the -υ- drops) and χάνω → χαμένος (the short stem χα-). Learn a verb's class once and its participle is predictable - and whatever the stem did, the stress lands on -μένος every time.
