The Pluperfect (υπερσυντέλικος) - “I had …”

The PLUPERFECT is the “past before the past”: it reports an action that was ALREADY complete before another past moment - “I had written the letter (before you called)”. It is the PERFECT with the auxiliary moved into the past: είχα (the imperfect of έχω) + the SAME invariant non-finite form the perfect uses. So έχω γράψει (“I have written”) → είχα γράψει (“I had written”); only the auxiliary changes. It runs είχα, είχες, είχε, είχαμε, είχατε, είχαν + the fixed form (γράψει / αγαπήσει / φάει / δει / πάει), which never moves. Use it to make the SEQUENCE of two past events explicit: the pluperfect one happened first.

The rule

The pluperfect (υπερσυντέλικος) is the past before the past: an action already complete before another past moment - Όταν ήρθες, είχα φάει ήδη (“When you came, I had already eaten”). It is the perfect with a past auxiliary: swap έχω for its imperfect είχα and keep the same fixed non-finite - έχω γράψειείχα γράψει. The auxiliary runs είχα, είχες, είχε, είχαμε, είχατε, είχαν; the second word never changes and is exactly the perfect’s, irregulars included (είχα φάει, είχα δει, είχα πάει). Use it to make the order of two past events explicit - the pluperfect one happened first - and as the building block of the past-unreal conditional (Αν είχα διαβάσει, θα είχα περάσει).
