Turning Active into Passive
The active↔passive transformation is mechanical once you see the moves. (1) The active OBJECT (accusative) becomes the passive SUBJECT (nominative): «ετοιμάζει το μάθημα» → «το μάθημα ...». (2) The verb switches to the mediopassive in the SAME tense: present ετοιμάζει → ετοιμάζεται, aorist ετοίμασε → ετοιμάστηκε, future θα ετοιμάσει → θα ετοιμαστεί, perfect έχει ετοιμάσει → έχει ετοιμαστεί. (3) The active SUBJECT, if kept, becomes the agent phrase από + accusative. So «Ο δάσκαλος θα ετοιμάσει το μάθημα» → «Το μάθημα θα ετοιμαστεί από τον δάσκαλο». Working the transformation both ways - active to passive and back - is the surest test that you own the whole voice.
The rule
Active → passive is three moves: (1) the active object (accusative) becomes the passive subject (nominative); (2) the verb switches to the mediopassive in the same tense - ετοιμάζει → ετοιμάζεται, ετοίμασε → ετοιμάστηκε, θα ετοιμάσει → θα ετοιμαστεί, έχει ετοιμάσει → έχει ετοιμαστεί; (3) the active subject, if kept, becomes the agent από + accusative. So Ο δάσκαλος θα ετοιμάσει το μάθημα → Το μάθημα θα ετοιμαστεί από τον δάσκαλο. Keep the tense; change only the voice.
