The Pluperfect Passive (είχα γραφτεί)
The pluperfect passive is the perfect passive with the auxiliary moved into the PAST: είχα (the imperfect of έχω) + the SAME invariant -εί non-finite. είχα/είχες/είχε/είχαμε/είχατε/είχαν + ετοιμαστεί/βρεθεί/χαθεί: «Το φαγητό είχε ετοιμαστεί πριν έρθουν» (the food had been prepared before they came). It is the “past-before-past” passive - an action already complete at some earlier past moment - the mirror of the active pluperfect είχα γράψει. The non-finite second word is byte-identical to the perfect passive's; only the auxiliary changed from έχω to είχα.
The rule
The pluperfect passive is the perfect passive with a past auxiliary: είχα (imperfect of έχω) + the same invariant -εί non-finite - είχα/είχες/είχε ετοιμαστεί, είχαν χαθεί. It is the “past-before-past” passive: Το φαγητό είχε ετοιμαστεί πριν έρθουν (“had been prepared before they came”). Swap έχει → είχε and the whole thing moves one step further back; the -εί word is byte-identical to the perfect passive's.
Paradigm
| Person | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
- Analytic pluperfect passive: the auxiliary είχα (imperfect of έχω) carries the person; ετοιμαστεί is the SAME invariant non-finite the perfect passive uses.
- είχαμε + the invariant ετοιμαστεί.
- είχες + the invariant ετοιμαστεί.
- είχατε + the invariant ετοιμαστεί.
- είχε + the invariant ετοιμαστεί.
- είχαν + the invariant ετοιμαστεί.
